They track the use of coupons as a way to gauge the wellbeing of a family without being too intrusive. Being onsite for delivery of food boxes serves a similar purpose.

Inspiring chesed Tomchei Shabbat is reliant upon three things: Families that sign up for the program; volunteers to run its operations; and donations of funds and food toward the effort.

The program prides itself on the diversity and generosity of those both on the giving AND on the receiving end. Program participants include families from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Some have children; some do not. Some are seniors or have disabilities; others are recently out of work. Some families are Ashkenazic. Some are Sephardic. Some are a combination thereof.

The goal of expanding the program, in part, is a concerted effort to reach beyond traditional Orthodox circles to help bring the light and joy of Shabbat into the homes of more Jewish families in greater Houston, Tomchei Shabbat volunteers said.

Our application and verification process is discrete and private. Applicants are asked to fill out our simple application online. Only one or two members of our verification team have access to all personally — identifying information in an application, so as to allow Tomchei Shabbat to verify the accuracy of the application.

Once an applicants information has been accepted, all personal information that could be used to identify an applicant is replaced with a unique identification number to protect each recipients privacy and maintain anonymity.
