In , he retired from the automobile business, began acquiring vacant land in Las Vegas, and engaged in the development of small shopping centers and a motel. He always enjoyed the challenge of making a deal. Lied established his charitable foundation in , and upon his death in at 74, nearly his entire estate funded the Lied Foundation Trust.
The Lied name has been emblazoned on an array of wonderful projects and has implanted the influence of his resources in a host of communities and countless lives.

His family had been in the auto business for decades; his father Ernst Sr. But in the younger Lied decided to switch gears, leave the Midwest, move to the growing gambling town in Nevada, and invest in real estate. Lied was accompanied in his new adventure by coworker Christina Hixson, who initially served as secretary, and then business manager and general manager, as he invested in land near the burgeoning Strip.
Initially Lied built 79 houses, a shopping center, and a unit motel, but he would go on to own more than 1, acres of prime Las Vegas real estate. Scurvy and rickets were both huge problems in sailors that were at sea for extended time and the addition of vitamin C, vitamin D, and calcium in their diets helped eradicate the problem.
In , Ernst was only 12 years old when in January, President Wilson presented his Fourteen Points, which assured citizens that World War I was being fought for a moral cause and outlined a plan for postwar peace in Europe.
The only leader of the Allies to present such a plan, the Europeans thought Wilson was being too idealistic. The points included free trade, open agreements, democracy and self-determination. They were based on the research and suggestions of advisors. In , at the age of 49 years old, Ernst was alive when on September 30th, movie star James Dean, 24, died in a car accident. He was headed in his new Porsche to a race in Salinas California when, traveling at 85 mph, he collided with a Ford Tudor, also speeding, driven by a 23 year old college student.
Dean died, his passenger and the other driver survived. In , when he was 64 years old, on April 10th, Paul McCartney announced that he was leaving the Beatles. John Lennon had previously told the band that he was leaving but hadn't publicly announced it. By the end of the year, each Beatle had his own album. In , in the year of Ernst Lied's passing, on April 24th, a rescue attempt was begun in the Iranian Hostage Crisis.
The attempt failed and 8 US servicemen were killed. Eight helicopters had been sent for the mission, but only 5 arrived in operating condition.
