Generally, practitioners of hospital medicine or hospitalists are internists with broad expertise. They work in-house on several units providing varying types of care. Though they are capable of treating patients like any other doctor, they often provide stabilizing care from hospital admittance to discharge and refer patients to specialists for more long-term treatment.

In addition to their patient care, they may engage in research and teaching. Hospitalists develop expertise in areas such caring for complicated cases for hospitalized patients, preventing hospital infections, tracking testing, managing the cost of patient care, and communicating with family members. A resident physician is a doctor who has completed medical school and is training to specialize in a specific area of medicine, such as surgery, pediatrics, or oncology.

This three to seven year period of postgraduate training is supervised by attending physicians. After completing a residency, doctors take examinations to qualify for specialist board certification.
