We've received your submission. They include a green mamba that bit him in March — requiring anti-venom from a South Carolina zoo, the Observer reported last month. Gifford is facing 36 misdemeanor counts for keeping venomous snakes in improper enclosures and three charges for having them in mislabeled containers.
He was also charged for not notifying police of the escaped cobra, as required by state law, the newspaper reported. North Carolina has no law prohibiting people from keeping, breeding or selling non-native venomous reptiles, but does have regulations on how they should be kept, as well as on reporting escaped animals. Before you drive the animal away from your home, check to see if it is a nursing mother. You can usually tell by the presence of descended, swollen teats along the abdomen. If you see these, there are babies somewhere that need to be found and relocated, too.
Assuming the raccoon is a male, you need to take him at least five miles away. Ten miles would be better, but five miles is the minimum. The area should be wooded with an even mixture of brush and open ground. The raccoon is going to want to hide, and he is either going to scoot up a tree or take to the brush. Water should also be nearby. For an adult, finding food will not be difficult if the nearby stream is sizeable.
Relocating a mother and her babies is going to be more of a challenge. If you really want to have the best success, create a wooden raccoon house and leave the babies inside, up in the crook of a tree.
The mother should be able to find them by scent, and they will be protected if she decides to abandon them. Check back each day to make sure they appear cared for. If she is going to take care of them, the mother will likely move them by day 3. Please be aware of the following city codes that apply to animals.
